About The Area

Citrus County, situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida, is a unique region located between the metropolitan areas of Tampa, Orlando, and Gainesville. Known as the "Nature Coast," approximately 40% of the land in Citrus County has been reserved for public use, making it an ideal destination for outdoor water activities such as fishing, scalloping, boating, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and tubing down the Rainbow River. Citrus & Marion Counties offer the best of both worlds for businesses and residents to live, work, and play.

Suncoast Parkway

Due to the gross development on the west coast north of Tampa FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) approved the building of the Suncoast Parkway.

Also known as the Veterans Expressway and Suncoast Parkway, it is a North-South toll road near the Florida Gulf Coast. Maintained and operated by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise, this 68-mile (109 km) transportation corridor extends from State Road 60 in Tampa north to State Road 44 near Lecanto.

The Veterans Expressway was built to accommodate the increasing commuter traffic in the Tampa-St. Petersburg metropolitan area, with the Suncoast Parkway opening in 2001, extending from near the northern terminus of the Veterans Expressway to U.S. Route 98, with a possible northern extension to U.S. Route 19/U.S. Route 98 in Crystal River in Citrus County in the planning and development stages.

Nature and Wildlife

In addition to the Gulf of Mexico, Citrus County is home to King's Bay and several rivers, including the Crystal River, Homosassa River, Withlacoochee River, Rainbow River, and Chassahowitzka River. The area boasts excellent saltwater and freshwater fishing opportunities. Lake Rousseau and the Tsala Apopka Lake chain offer some of the best bass fishing in Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico, providing a seemingly endless supply of enjoyment, including the chance to catch world-record tarpon.

One of the highlights of Citrus County is the City of Crystal River, a quaint coastal town home to the West Indian Manatee. These gentle giants are drawn to the warm, spring-fed waters of the Crystal River and Homosassa River, making them a popular attraction for visitors who can rent boats or take a snorkel and scuba tours to swim with them.

The county seat of Citrus County is the City of Inverness, which offers a variety of historical landmarks, including the Old Courthouse Museum, built in 1912. The downtown square has been beautifully restored and is a great place to browse shops and restaurants or relax under a moss-draped oak tree.
